CODESA 3

Actions against the ANC

On 16 November 1992, the Goldstone Commission raided the offices of a top secret branch of Military Intelligence in Pretoria and discovered that the unit was continuing with activities against the ANC, in defiance of President De Klerk’s instructions.

President De Klerk appointed Air Force General Pierre Steyn to assume immediate command of Military Intelligence and to carry out a thorough investigation of its activities.

On 19 December, General Steyn reported that a limited number of South African Defence Force (SADF) members had been involved in illegal or unauthorised activities and malpractices.

President De Klerk ordered:

  • the compulsory retirement of 16 SADF members including two generals and four brigadiers;
  • the compulsory leave for seven SADF members pending further investigations; and
  • continuing investigations by General Steyn, the Goldstone Commission, the South African Police Service, and Attorneys-General.
